What are the advantages of a powder firefighting system?

Dust fire-fighting systems

Fixed powder systems consist of one or more powder storage tanks, equipped with a pressurization system (usually with nitrogen) capable of delivering powder through the appropriate delivery lines. The powder is distributed by specific nozzles located at the points of operation. The system can be operated by a fire detection system or manually activated.

From the point of view of intervention, these systems are divided into two types:

  • at full-saturation: the system discharges the dust into the upper part of the protected environment, which must be completely enclosed, so that the entire volume can be saturated while covering the entire floor area;
  • at localized saturation: the system discharges dust and propellant gas directly onto the equipment and materials to be protected, located in totally or partially open spaces.

Fixed powder systems are widely used in Class B fires, such as those involving flammable liquid transfer pumps.
